Samuel and Charlotte had moved to Belfast, Northern Ireland shortly after the 4th child, Harold was born. All four older children attended the Roden Street School in Belfast. They returned to Dromara in February, 1921, probably because Samuel was leaving for the U.S. the following month. When he immigrated, he left Charlotte at home in Ireland with the children - she was pregnant with the twins when he left. The idea was for him to get settled in the U.S., find a job and a home, and become naturalized before he sent for Charlotte and the children. Charlotte and the children didn't follow to the U.S. until more than 6 years later.
Per the Passenger Manifest and Passenger Record of the Aquitania, Ellis Island Foundation, New York, Samuel immigrated to the United States from Ireland in March of 1921. He was the 4th brother to leave Ireland for the U.S. He departed Southampton, England on March 12, 1921 and arrived at Ellis Island, New York on Mar 19, 1921. He arrived in the United States with $125. Although the ship's manifest states he had previously been in the U.S. in 1914, there is yet to be found any documentation of that passage.
Per the Passenger Manifest and Passenger Record of the S.S. Cameronia, Ellis Island Foundation, New York, Charlotte, along with five of her children, immigrated to the United States from Ireland in May of 1927. They left Londonderry, Northern Ireland on April 24, 1927 and arrived at Ellis Island, New York on May 3, 1927. Willie, the oldest son, immigrated in 1925.
The family made their home in Gary, Indiana where Samuel work for The Gary
National Bank as a building engineer. Their second son, Robert, never
married and preceded them in death in 1942.
