Notes:
Ernest studied at Dartmouth College and graduated from Cornell with a
degree in chemical engineering. At the onset of World War I, he went to France
as a volunteer ambulance driver in the American Field Service. He served with
S.S.u> 4 for 8 months in 1915-16. After the United States entered the war, he
attended Army OTS at Gettysburg Barracks and was commissioned a Lieutenant. He
left Gettysburg Dec. 23, 1917 arriving in Liverpool Jan. 7, 1918. He returned to
the front, in command of a machine gun company with the 2nd Division, to the
very same Verdun trenches he served while in the AFS. He did not lose one man in
his company.
He served in the battles of Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and in the
Defensive Sector, was awarded the Purple Heart for having been wounded by
shrapnel and earned the rank of Captain. Post war, he remained in France for a
year working on reparations before returning to the USA.
Because he had been gassed in combat, for which he also received The Purple
Heart, he could no longer work in the chemical industry. After studying
horticulture at the Boyce Thompson Institute, he founded Westcroft Gardens
where, for over 60 years, he hybridized many prized rhododendrons and built a
beautiful park that remains in Grosse Ile for the enjoyment of all.
