Alma had some excitement in her young life as written by her daughter.  From: "The Peasley Paper", Spring 1971, editor, Frederick Lamphere:

DINNER FOR DESPERADOS
A true story by Mabel (Skinner) Chorlton

"My mother Alma, a teen-aged girl, was oldest of the Peasley children at home. Their mother died a few years before. Her older sister Mary was already married and away from home. The five younger children; Ellen, Julia, Frank, Charlie and baby Fred were left in Alma's care. Their father, Almond Peasley, worked away from home all day.

About noon one day their little dog announced the arrival of two men on horseback who asked if they might be given something to eat. Having been taught to feed hungry travelers, the girls began to prepare dinner. Alma made baking powder biscuits. Her sister cooked meat and even fixed wild crab apple sauce.

During this time the dog kept barking at the strangers until one man wanted to put it outside but Alma assured him the dog only wished to protect the children.

While eating, one man sat at the table in such a way that he could see down the road. The men were pleased with the meal and remarked how quickly the girls had prepared it. When they had finished, the visitors asked how much they owed for their food. Alma told them there was no charge for helping travelers.

After the men expressed their thanks and rode away, the girls talked as they cleared the table about their unknown guests.  Imagine their surprise when under one of the plates they found twenty dollars!

When Grandpa Peasley came home from his day's work he asked Alma if they had seen two men ride past that day. Naturally she told with pride of their experience. Then Almond informed my mother that they had just served dinner to Frank and Jesse James who had just robbed the Northfield bank and were making their escape!"

Alma was living with her brother Frank in 1880.  With her were three Stilwell children that are rumored to belong to her and her sister's husband, Ard Stilwell, but the proof has not yet been located.
