FLY CREEK – Mrs. Vera M. Young, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, formerly of Fly Creek, passed away Sunday morning, Sept. 16, 2007, at Otsego Manor. She was 92.

Vera was born Sept. 6, 1915, at home on Willsey Hill in the town of Springfield to William and Ella (Shaver) Galusha.

Raised in Springfield, she attended a one-room schoolhouse on Willsey Hill and later attended school in Van Hornesville.

On Nov. 10, 1934, Vera married Edwin F. Young, in Fort Plain, and devoted her life thereafter to raising and caring for their family. She also served as a housekeeper for the Thayers at their home on Otsego Lake, and was employed for 25 years in the laundry at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown.

A talented seamstress, Vera was accomplished in the art of quilting and throughout her life created numerous quilts that she gave to her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed making matching pillows for her quilts and, until just recently, made pillows for some of the staff at Otsego Manor. It was also a pleasure for her to listen to the music of Lawrence Welk.

Vera is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Shirley Stergas and her husband, John, of Richfield Springs, and Mrs. Joyce Haney and her husband, Jerry, of Fly Creek; three sons, William G. Young, of Cherry Valley, Richard E. Young and his wife, Joan, of Milesburg, Pa., and David A. Young and his wife, Ann, of Richfield Springs; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Ronald J. Talbot Sr., of Fly Creek; one sister, Freda Jones, of Palatine Bridge; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin, who died July 18, 1992; one daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Vera Talbot, who died Dec. 15, 1999; and two sons, Randy Young, who died in 1960, and Donald L. Young, who died June 22, 2007.

A funeral service will be offered at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John C. Young officiating.

The Service of Committal and Burial will follow in Springfield Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, when Vera’s family will be in attendance.
