Funeral services were held Sunday, January 4,
1981 for Kate Adella Louise Beardsley Wood at the Kit Carson Gymnasium.
Internment followed in the Kit Carson Cemetery. Mrs. Wood died Thursday, January
1, 1981 in the St. Joseph Hospital, Cheyenne Wells, Colorado after a short
illness.
She was born September 30, 1890 in Harvard, Illinois to Egbert D. and Addie C.
(Doe) Beardsley. On June 26, 1912, she married Park Hudson Wood in Harvard,
Illinois, They were blessed with 3 sons and 2 daughters. In 1919, she and her
family moved from Harvard to the Wood homestead northeast of Kit Carson, In
1920, they moved to Kit Carson where Mr. Wood ran various business, including
Wood Automotive. About 1927. Mrs. Wood opened the Royal Cafe and ran this for
several years with the help of her daughters. The cafe gradually turned into a
general merchandise store, Wood Mercantile. She was still running a small
version of the store at the time of her death.
In 1908, Mrs. Wood joined the Eastern Star, In
1943, she joined the VFW Auxiliary Post # 3411. She was a member of Royal
Neighbors of America and belonged to the Kit Carson Senior Citizens.
Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her husband, Park H. Wood, one
daughter-in-law, Alma Wood; two sons-in-law, W. Leonard Burtnett and George J.
Schrammel, and one grandson, Lindy D. Wood.
Surviving are her children, Park B. Wood and Louise A. Bergman of Kit Carson,
Frank E. Wood of Commerce City, Colorado; Addie A. Burtnett of Oregon, Missouri;
and Charles L. Wood of Denver, Colorado. Survivors also include 21
grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers at Mrs. Woods funeral were her grandsons, Roy Burtnett,
Park G. Wood, William L. Wood, Chester and Kenneth Bergman, Ronald Wood and
Chris Wood.
