Earl Wayne Whitney, 72, formerly of Wellsboro, died Friday, May 4, 1956, in Oklahoma City, Okla., where he resided.

Born in Wellsboro on Oct. 15, 1883, he was the son of Edwin and Ella Carpenter Whitney.

A graduate of Wellsboro High School in 1903, he graduated at Bucknell University in 1907 and was principal of a school in Wewoka, Okla., for four years.  He continued the study of law while teaching.  He practiced law in Wewoka as well as Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Okla.

He became interested in extensive oil operations in Oklahoma.

He was a member of the Baptist church.

Surviving are his wife, Edith; three sons, Earl Wayne Jr. and Willis Orrin of Oklahoma City, and Edwin stationed with the Air Force; three daughters, Mary Ellen of New York City, Naomi and Jessie Ruth of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Putney of Elmira N.Y., and Mrs. Lola Deming of San Perlita, Tex; one brother, Truman of Wellsboro; and four grandchildren.

Services and burial were in Oklahoma City on Monday.
