OBITUARY
Name: Lucretia (McMahan) Wheeler
From: The Times-Leader, McLeansboro, Illinois
Date: February, 1921
Lucretia Wheeler, youngest daughter of Stephen and Nancy McMahan, was born in
Galia County, Ohio, June 08, 1847; departed this life Feb. 13, 1921, aged 73
years, 8 months, 5 days.
When she was six years of age, she came with her parents to Hamilton Co. and
lived there until her death. The voyage the family made to Illinois from Ohio
was by boat down the Ohio River to Shawnee town and from there by wagon to their
homestead in this county. She married in 1866 to John W. Wheeler, a Civil War
veteran, and to them were born four daughters and two sons.
One daughter and one son preceded her in death, Benson & Lucinda. Those
surviving her are Mrs. Mary E. Sloan, McLeansboro, Mrs. Julia Counsil, and Mrs.
Harriet Wooldridge, West Frankfort, and John Wheeler.
She was converted at an early age and united with the Methodist Episcopal church
as a charter member at Bethel, about six miles southeast of McLeansboro. About
fourteen years ago she moved to McLeansboro and transferred her membership to
McLeansboro M.E. church where she was a member until her death.
Mrs. Wheeler was faithful to her church and to her convictions. During her long
illness she always had a testimony for those who visited her. Her faith never
wavered; she prayed to be taken from this life that she might be relieved of her
suffering. She was always ready to help in sickness or in time of trouble . Her
husband preceded her just sixteen years ago the same date, only a few hours
difference in their death. She leaves to mourn her departure, four children,
twenty five grand children and sixteen great grandchildren. Servant of God, well
done, Thy glorious wayfarer's past; The battles fought, the victory won And thou
art crowned at last.
