Barbara R. Weessies, formerly of Climax, passed away, Saturday afternoon, February 28, 2004 at her Portage residence.
She was born June 27, 1924 in Kalamazoo, daughter of Roy and Esther (Lamereaux) Carpenter.
Barbara married Melville Penley in September 1947. After a few years, their marriage ended in divorce.
She married Sherry Baughman in July 1952. They celebrated 20 years of marriage together, until his death in August 1972.
On February 2, 1973, Barbara married the love of her life, Robert Lynn Weessies, Sr. After a very happy 27 years of marriage together, Robert died on July 31, 2000.
She is also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Wilbert Carpenter; and a sister, Jean Carpenter, as a child.
Barbara is survived by a daughter, Ruth Pancoast of Kalamazoo; a son, Ken (Elsie) Baughman of Smyrna, DE; two grandchildren, Brian Pancoast and Jean (Nicky) DeLavan; three step-daughters, Sharon (Patrick) Harvey of Climax, Phyllis Simmons of Scotts, and Donna (Stanley) Pierce of Parchment; three step-sons, Robert, Jr. (Connie) Weessies of Climax, Ralph Weessies of Climax, and Jay (Kathleen) Weessies of Mason, 13 step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous step-great-grandchildren.
Barbara had several jobs from 1941 until 1957 when she was hired by the Climax-Scotts Community School system as secretary to the superintendent. She retired from Climax in 1979 and worked in the Ottawa County school system until 1985.
Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 PM on Tuesday evening.
Funeral services for Mrs. Weessies will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Climax Chapel, 205 E. Maple Street. Burial will follow in Prairie Home Cemetery in Climax.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
