Billings, Feb. 17 -- Final rites were conducted here today for Harlan J. Thompson, 83, retired lumber dealer and former mayor of Billings, who died Tuesday at a local hospital.  He had resided here since 1901.

Mr. Thompson was born at Bew Cassel, Wis.  He came to Montana in 1888 and for some years lived in Dillon.  He married Mabel W. Coffin there in 1893.  He organized the Billings Lumber company soon after coming here, was also an investor in farm property and owned interests in Thermopolis, Wyo.  He served a term as mayor beginning in 1909.

He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Mrs. James Ralph Kelly of San Antonio, Tex.; a son, Lt. Harlan Steele Thompson of the United States Navel Reserve; a sister, Lillie T. Nuss of Gary, Ind.; a brother, Merrill Thompson of Ontario, Calif., and one grandson. His son and daughter were here at the time of his death.
