LAWRENCE -- Ralph D. Stewart, 78, Lawrence, died Thursday, March 14, 1996 at a Lawrence hospital.

Mr. Stewart worked for the Army Corps of Engineers for several years before he retired in 1973.  He then worked for the Ford Motor Co. for 11 years.  He was a technical sergeant for the Army in the Pacific Theater in the Philippines during World War II.

He was born July 15, 1917 at Scranton, the son of Ernest O. and Maude Watson Stewart.  He moved to Lawrence from Topeka in 1967.

Mr. Stewart was a 25-year member of the Red Dale Schooners Camping Club, Dorsey Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion and he and his wife traveled with the Senior Partners of Mercantile Bank travel group.

He was married to Irene Galutia on June 14, 1942 at Lyndon.  She survives.  Other survivors include a daughter, Deborah K. McCaskill, Eskridge; a son, Dennis L. Stewart, Corona, Calif.; and two granddaughters.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Lyndon Cemetery.  Military services will be conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.  Relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Mortuary.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Diabetes Association and sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
