John W. Newcomer, 83, Berne, a former Geneva resident, died at 12:58 p.m. Thursday in Chalet Village.

He was born on September 1, 1915 in Bloomfield, Missouri to Joseph and Addie E. Jennings Newcomer.  He married Mary D. Davidson Doherty on August 3, 1978.  She died on April 22, 1998.

He was a World Ward II veteran who participated in the D-Day invasion in France and fought in northern France, the Ardennes Forest, the Rhineland and central Europe, winning a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

Surviving are a step-son, Michael E. Doherty, Geneva; four step-daughters, Mrs. Lester (Sandra) McIntyre and Mrs. Gene (Carol) Bodle, both of Decatur; Mrs. Clarel (Kay) Strausburg, Portland; and Mrs. Randy (Vickie) Brotherton, Bryant; a brother, J. C. Newcomer, Bloomfield, Missouri; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.  A step-son, Larry Butch Doherty is deceased.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Downing Funeral Home, Geneva, with burial in West Lawn Cemetery, Geneva including graveside military rites by the Berne American Legion Post. Visitation is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday.
