Shirley Mortenson 1924 – 2016
Shirley was born in Regina, Sask. on November 2,1924. Her father, "Slim"
Quenett, was a gifted automotive mechanic and that skill took him to several
small Saskatchewan towns including Govan. While living and going to school in
Govan, Shirley met her future husband Ward Mortenson. After Ward returned from
his Naval duties in WWII, they were married July 31, 1946. They resided on the
family farm until 2007 when they moved to Centennial Manor in Strasbourg. The
last few months of Shirley's life were spent in the Pioneer Village Care Home in
Regina where she passed away March 6, 2016.
Shirley had many interests. She enjoyed sports, both competing and as a
spectator. She was an avid curler and was a Roughrider season ticket holder for
45 years. She also cheered for the Blue Jays. Shirley was a long-time member of
the Lakeshore Women's Institute, Federated Women's Institutes of Canada, and the
Associated Country Women of the World. She attended several international
conferences, including trips to USA, Holland and New Zealand. 4H also had a
place in her heart where she spent over 15 years as the general leader of the
Govan 4H Homecraft Club. She was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion
Ladies Auxiliary. Last Mountain Regional Park was her passion. Hers was one of
the first two cabins in the park with only a scrub poplar bluff in the distance.
April was not too early and October was not too late to live at the cabin. Her
yard and flower beds were a showpiece of the Park. She loved it when family and
friends came to stay at the Park for a week or two. She particularly enjoyed
having the family there for a wiener roast and to visit around the campfire. For
many years she coordinated the Red Cross learn to swim program as well as
filling the role of park administrator.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Ward in September 2015; daughter Beverley
in February 2016; brother- in-law Don E. Mortenson in May 2015; as well as
sisters Lois (Al) Baffo and Beth (Neil) Upshall. She leaves to mourn son Don
(Carolyn) Mortenson, son Howard (Brenda) Mortenson and daughter Lois (Larry)
Trowell; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also, brother
Bob (Connie) Quenett, brother-in-law Lorne (Velda) Mortenson, sister-in-law Ruth
(Walter) Leverton and sister-in-law Frankie Mortenson, along with numerous
nieces and nephews. A private family gathering will be held to celebrate her
life at a later date. Hansen's Funeral Home, Strasbourg in care of arrangements.
