John "Ward" Mortenson
September 18, 1922 – September 24, 2015
John "Ward" Mortenson was born on a farm west of Duval, Saskatchewan on
September 18, 1922. He spent his entire life farming in the Govan/Duval area
except for his military service in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RCNVR)
during World War II. He enlisted in 1942 and was discharged in 1945. Ward
returned to the farm in the Govan area after the War. In 1946, he married
Shirley Quenett. Over the years, four children were born to this union.
Ward is survived by Shirley, his wife of 69 years, and four children – Donald
(Carolyn), Howard (Brenda), Beverley (Jim) Pratt and Lois (Larry) Trowell. His
grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Jeromy (Lutina; Tanner and Jenna),
Lindsay (Garret; Ethan), Jennifer (Hugh), Lisa; (Mitchell; Karly, William and
James), Stefanie and Nathan. He is also survived by a sister Ruth (Walter)
Leverton of California, brother Lorne (Velda) of Govan and sister-in- law
Frankie of Regina, plus his long-time friend Gerben (Afke) de Hoop and their
children. He will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his bother Don in 2015.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Nokomis Health Centre – where he received
such good care from Dr. Lim and the dedicated staff. Family and friends are
invited to gather at the Duval Community Hall at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October
24, 2015.
