Name:   Mertie L. (Carpenter) Monks

Mrs. Mertie Carpenter Monks was born in Middlebury Nov. 24, 1885, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James D. Carpenter and died after a long illness at the home of her daughter Mrs. Chas. Jones in Wellsboro, August 29.  Mrs. Monks had been at her daughter's home only a few days when she was stricken.

Mrs. Monks was married to Ernest F. Monks of Middlebury in 1906 and they had resided in Middlebury all their married life.  She is survived by her husband, three daughters, Mrs. Morrell Stebbins and Mrs. Chas. Jones of Wellsboro, and June Monks of Middlebury; by one son, Dale Monks.  The following brothers and sisters also survive: Archie Carpenter of Mansfield, Mrs. John Lyons of Niles Valley, James D. Carpenter of Osceola, and Miss Lottie Carpenter of Middlebury; Ernest G. Monks and Charles Jones Jr., of Wellsboro, are the surviving grandchildren.  Mrs. Monks was a member of the Niles Valley Methodist church and of the Middlebury Grange.

She was a most generous and kind-hearted neighbor and a devoted wife and mother.  The profusion of flowers bespoke the esteem in which she was held.  Rev. C. W. Sheriff conducted the funeral services at the Evans Funeral Home; burial in Middlebury
