Name:   Opal Virginia (Farris) Mayberry

MT. VERNON — Opal Virginia (Farris) Mayberry, age 94, went to meet her Lord at 11:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, from Heritage Woods assisted living in McLeansboro.

Opal was born June 4, 1918, at Hoodville to James Ervin and Pearl (Bond) Farris. Upon the death of her mother, she was raised, from age 4, by her stepmother, Lucy Pearl (Jones) Farris.

Opal married Ulis B. Mayberry on March 7, 1939. She was a member of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church.

Besides farming with her husband, she worked at Elder Manufacturing Co. (a shirt factory) for approximately 18 years.  She had a passion for gardening, canning and making quilts.

Opal is survived by four sons, Charles (wife Alice) Mayberry of Genoa, Gary (wife Marie) Mayberry of Elgin, Gerald (wife Alice Kay) Mayberry of Broughton and Ronald (wife Ruth Ann) Mayberry of Iola, Kan.; two daughters, Carolyn (husband the Rev. James Clifford) Rose of Carrier Mills and Ida (husband Robert) Russell of Covington, La.; and former daughter-in-law Donna Mayberry of Woodstock. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church. Rob L. Russell II will conduct the service. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today (Thursday) at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro and from 9:30 a.m. Friday until the service time at 11 a.m. at the church.  Memorials may be made to TIP Hospice of Mount Carmel and will be accepted at Gholson Funeral Home.

Opal was preceded in death by her husband; parents; her only brother, William Farris, who was killed in World War II; and one grandchild, David Mayberry.
