Carmi, Ill. — Bette Lee Mayberry, 90, of Gower, Mo., entered her eternal rest peacefully on Monday, Sept. 5, 2011, at the Gower Convalescent Home.
She was born Feb. 16, 1921, in Shawneetown, the daughter of Grant and Ethel (Phillips) Saffer. She married Lloyd Mayberry on April 24, 1941, and he preceded in her in death in 1979.
Bette was a member of Carmi First Methodist Church and had been active in the White County Home Extension. She worked in her father's restaurant in Old Shawneetown and at Montgomery Ward's in Chicago. Bette was an avid cook, gardener, fisherman, walker, Christian and Cubs fan. She was a resident of Carmi for 59 years.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Cindy Mayberry of Trimble, Mo. her grandson, Grant Mayberry of Denver, Colo.; and her granddaughter, Beth Mayberry of Cambridge, Mass. Bette's extended family includes relative in the Tri-State area and California. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; her parents; a stepmother, Mary Brown; and sisters, Margie Lockler and Pauline Barnard.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday.The Rev. Gary Feldman will officiate. Burial will take place in Ebenezer Cemetery in Norris City. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Carmi.
