ASHEVILLE -- Joe E. Maney, 68, of Lower Christ School Road, Route 1 Fletcher, died Wednesday in a Black Mountain hospital after an extended illness.

He was a son of the late Lucius and Maggie Bradley Maney and was a native of the Reems Creek section of Buncombe County.  Mr. Maney was a retired carpenter and was active in sports at the old Weaverville High School.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Corda Roberts Maney; a son, Maj. Joe Lynn Maney of Elgin Air Force Base in Florida; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Dillingham of Barnardsville and Mrs. Pansy Shepherd of Weaverville; a brother Robert Maney of Swannanoa; and granddaughters.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, Weaverville.  The Rev. John A. Wright will officiate.  Burial will be in Maney Branch Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home.
