Eldred -- John Higgins, 72, of S. Main St., a retired refinery worker and prominent resident here the past 60 years, died Friday (July 30, 1954) at Bradford Hospital.  He had been in failing health the past 10 years, and was hospitalized last Sunday.

A Native of Canadaigua [sic], where he was born Aug. 15, 1881.  Mr. Higgins was employed by Shields Lumber Co., Eldred, and later the Eldred Refinery, retiring in 1940.

Surviving are his wife, Ada Galutia Higgins; one son, Francis Higgins, Emporium; six daughters, Mrs. John Lekas and Mrs. Thomas Moonan, both of Bradford; Mrs. Alfred Grigsby, Eldred, Mrs. Steve Parker, Rixford; Mrs. Clyde McCracken, Salem, N.J., and Mrs. Merle Travis, Hornell; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Frame Funeral Home, Eldred, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday (Aug. 2, 1954).  The Rev. E. Lowell Eldridge, pastor of First Methodist Church, will officiate.  Burial will be at KcKean.
