John R. Hayden, 77, Illinois City, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at home.

Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday at Family Funeral Services, Aledo. Burial is in Aledo Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Reynolds American Legion Post 1166.

Visitation is noon to service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

He was born Dec. 30, 1924, to David and Annabel Gettamy Hayden. He married Betty Galusha July 15, 1950, in Aledo.

He served in the Army. He farmed in rural Illinois City while working for the Rock Island Arsenal. He retired from the Arsenal.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Illinois Farm Bureau, Reynolds American Legion Post 1166 and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Hayden, Illinois City; a daughter, Catherine Hayden, Davenport; sons, Mike Hayden, Muscatine, Patrick Hayden, Moline, Thomas Hayden, Sherrard, and John Hayden Jr., Illinois City; five grandchildren; sisters, Cecelia Baldwin, New Boston, and Betty Mays, Denver, Colo.; and brothers, Dick Hayden, Sacramento, Calif., and David Hayden Jr., Muscatine. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry, two sisters, and a brother.
