Valparaiso -- Margaret L. Harper, 87, passed away on Friday, the 28th day of October, 1994, at home.  She was a resident of Valparaiso for the past 12 years and formerly lived in McLeansboro, Ill.

She was born Nov. 23, 1906, in Clover Hill, Ohio, the daughter of Jesse Clifton and Ellen (Davis) Patch.  On Dec. 23, 1939, in Clinton, Ohio, she married Harold Robert Harper. 

She was retired from a teaching career in the Ross Township Schools, including teaching at Amsworth and Henry P. Fieler School.  She was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association.  Mrs. Harper was a graduate of Indiana State University and was one of the first women to do graduate work at Harvard University.  After her retirement from the Ross Township School System, she and her husband Harold retired to his home in McLeansboro, Ill. where they lived until Harold's death, April 19, 1982.  Since that time, she has lived at the Pines Retirement Home in Valparaiso, Ind.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Valparaiso.

She is survived by two sons, Robert (Shirley) Harper of Valparaiso and Thomas E. Harper of Michigan City, Ind., seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and her sister, Katherine Lordan, a former principal in the Gary School System who is presently residing in Naples, Fla.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Clifton and Frank Patch, and a sister, Betty Myers.

Visitation will be Sunday, 2-5 p.m. at Bartholomew Funeral Home.  Funeral Services will be Tuesday, Nov 1, 1994 at Harre Funeral Home, McLeansboro, Ill.  Sister Mary Erwin officiating, burial at Ten Mile Cemetery, McLeansboro, Ill., visitation at Harre Funeral Home Tuesday, 9 a.m. until time of service.
