Thomas M, Friel, 76, of 635 S. 27th St., died at 7:38 p.m. Friday (Jan. 1, 1971) in Home Hospital shortly after being admitted.  He had been in ill health two weeks.

He was born and reared in Mcleansboro, Ill., for 16 years prior to moving to Lafayette in 1865.  He was married in 1965 in Lafayette to Lelia Gould Stults who survives.

Mr. Friel was employed as a watchman at Consolidated Industries for the past five years and formerly was a carpenter and farmer in Decatur, Ill.

He was a member of Mary's Chapel United Methodist Church at McLeansboro, Ill., and a member of Tippecanoe County Farm Bureau.

Surviving with the widow are one son and one daughter by a former marriage, Glenn C. Friel and Mrs. Lester French, both of Rock Island, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Alan Casey of Spring Valley, Ill., and Mrs. Max Grenard of Lafayette; one stepson, Omer L. Stults of Lafayette; two brothers, Paul E. Friel, McLeansboro, Ill., and Nolan Friel of Waukegan, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Mendenhall, McLeansboro, Ill., and Mrs. Pearl Sutton of Carmi, Ill.
