Miss Colburn was born in Oberlin of July 3, 1867, and attended Oberlin College from 1887 to 1890. She did special work at M.I.T. and Columbia, and other institutions. She was nationally recognized as the director for the Yale University dining halls and for her work as a designer of cooking equipment. She held the rank of Professor at Yale, and was granted an honorary M.A. degree from there.
Miss Colburn also reorganized the dining halls at Columbia and Chicago Universities, and investigated living conditions at many other institutions.
