Mars Hill - Carveth G Carter, age 89, of Mars Hill, formerly of Fairview, died Sunday, August 5, 2012.

Mr. Carter was born January 5, 1923, in Buncombe County. He was a former member of Nazarene Church and current member of Sand Hill Baptist Church. He retired from General Electric in 1983. A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II where he made a combat jump behind the lines on D Day and was in the Battle of the Bulge. He was preceded in death by his parents, David R. and Florie Tuten Carter; wife, Violet Ora King Carter who died in 2005; son, Paul L. Carter; sister, Miriam Carter; brother, Burnice M. Carter; and half-brother, Arthur Carter.

Surviving are his daughter, Emma Jean Radford and husband Jack of Mars Hill; sons, Carveth Dewayne Carter and wife Nancy of Mills River and Roger Keith Carter and wife Jeanne of Candler; sister, Grace Cole and husband Tommy of Asheville; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

His funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 9, 2012, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, with Revs. Michael Carter and Jim Staggs officiating. Burial will be in Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with full military rites by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Volunteer Memorial Team.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. There will also be a gathering of family and friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church, 2 Bear Creek Rd, Asheville, NC 28806.
