ASHEVILLE - William F. Bill Buckner, 79, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, at Mission Hospitals, Memorial Campus, after a brief illness.

Bill was a native of Buncombe County, having been born to the late Fred D. and Grace Braman Buckner. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Christine Crisp Buckner, who died in 2005.

Bill lived and worked in the Woodfin community his entire life. His home, which has been in the Buckner family for more than 100 years, became a landmark for many in the area. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having been stationed in Tacoma, Wash. In 1950, he met Christine Crisp and they married on Sept. 8, 1951.

Surviving are his daughters, Jan Byerley and husband, Kent, of Canby, Ore., and Eva Greene and husband, Michael, of Asheville; son, Eric Buckner and fiancee, Margaret Tuten, of Asheville; and three grandchildren, Tim Galyean, Adam Galyean and Eva-Michelle Greene.

The graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in West Memorial Park, with Dr. Buddy Corbin officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville.
