ASHEVILLE - Chris Buckner passed on into eternal life on Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at Solace Hospice Center after a period of declining health. Chris was 76 years young, always having a great sense of humor and a positive attitude about life and its challenges.
The daughter of the late Simp and Nettie Crisp, Chris moved from Graham County to Asheville as a young woman. It was here that she met the love of her life, William (Bill) Buckner, her husband of 54 years, who has been her dedicated caregiver in her final years.
Chris found joy in the simple pleasures of life, gardening and harvesting, current events, friends and family. She was especially beloved by children, and their parents, all over Buncombe County as she gave of her time and talents becoming a surrogate grandmother for many whose families were separated by distance. Chris was a member of Newbridge Baptist Church and enjoyed the fellowship of the Woodfin Seniors Group.
In addition to her husband, Bill, Chris is survived by her children, Jan Byerley and her husband, Kent, of Canby, Ore.; Eva Greene and her husband, Michael, of Asheville; and Eric Buckner and partner, Margaret Tuten, of Asheville. Grandma was especially delighted and proud of her three grandchildren, Tim Galyean, Adam Galyean and Eva-Michelle Greene. A sister, Lucille Nelson of Michigan, survives Chris as well as three brothers, J.H., J.R. and Lowell Crisp and sisters-in-law, Wilma, Lisa and Carolyn Crisp. Chris was close to her nieces and nephews and their children.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, with the Rev. Clark Henderson officiating. Burial will be in West Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
