Article regarding Fred's death (paper unknown - Poplar Bluff, Missouri):
ESSEX FARMER 76, VICTIM OF HYDROPHOBIA
Doctors Diagnose Case Soon After Man Brought Here - First Case Seen Locally
LITTLE HOPE FOR THE MAN'S RECOVERY
Hydrophobia Always Proven Fatal Once It Gets Hold Of Victim, They Say
Fred Mayberry, aged 76, farmer living near Essex, was brought to the
Brandon Hospital in Poplar Bluff today suffering from what doctors who have
examined him diagnose as an advanced case of hydrophobia. Doctors stated
also that it was the first case they have ever seen where a human suffered from
the disease, which is known to be fatal. There is no cure for hydrophobia,
according to experts.
Mr. Mayberry, it is stated, goes into convulsions even at the sight of
water. Cold air, bright lights, and unusual noises also cause him to have
convulsions of the throat and chest. Water particularly, according to
doctors, causes the convulsions. The word "hydrophobia" means "fear of
water", and was the name given to the disease suffered chiefly by dogs and
occasionally some other animals, because of the fear they have of water when the
disease grips them.
Mayberry was bitten by his own dog four months ago. The bite was
only a slight wound and the farmer paid little attention to it at the time.
He said it healed quickly. After the dog bit Mayberry, it disappeared, he
said, and he believed some neighbor killed it. However, he was unable to
trace the animal.
Under ordinary conditions, the doctors at Brandon hospital said,
hydrophobia develops in from three to twelve weeks from the time of the bite.
However, records show it has developed within a years time.
Last Monday, Mayberry suffered illness, the first symptoms of his present
ailment. He had a hard chill and fever and his condition continually grew
worse. He has had no water since that time.
Mayberry and his wife came to Stoddard County from Hamilton County, Ill.,
in 1900. They have no children. Mrs. Mayberry was at her husband's
bedside this afternoon.
Noted in The Complete History of Butler County Missouri:
"In November of
1934, Fred Mayberry, 76, a farmer near Essex, died of rabies in a Poplar Bluff
hospital. Many doctors came there to study his case."
The death certificate for Fred shows his name spelled Maberry and buried in
Bluff Cemetery. Fred and Laura are actually buried in Bloomfield Cemetery
and the spelling of the surname on their gravestone is Mabery. Their Twin
daughters, Opel L.
and Okel L., are buried in Bluff Cemetery with their surname also spelled Mabery.
Ben Ross, the son of Louis and Eliza Ross, was raised by Fred and
Laura and is buried next to them in Bloomfield Cemetery.
