John was killed in an air accident during World War II. He was training for night-flying missions as part of the Night Attack and Combat Training Unit, Atlantic (NACTULant) at the top-secret Charlestown Naval Auxiliary Air Station. In bad weather and fog, training could be as risky as combat. More than 60 brave pilots died in plane crashes at Charlestown. Many of their bodies were never recovered
