Ephraim and Mary lived in Rehoboth, Massachusetts until about 1775, when he sold his land and moved to Richmond, New Hampshire

This Ephraim called himself Ephraim Jr. and called his son Ephraim III.  It seems that his grandfather, Ephraim, who was actually Ephraim Sr., was deceased and, in their minds, they all moved up a notch, making the original Ephraim Jr., the new Ephraim Sr.  In order to distinguish which one was which, it can be shown that their signatures can place them in the appropriate line.  The original Ephraim Sr. (born about 1665) signed by mark; Ephraim Jr. (born about 1687) signed his name; this Ephraim (the III, born in 1714) signed by mark; and his son, Ephraim IV signed his name.

Various records show the surname spelled Hicks.
