In 1906, William killed his wife and than killed
himself. Per the Boonville Inquirer, Friday, June 29, 1906:
William Hardin shot and instantly killed hi
wife at their home in Tennyson, on Saturday night, June 23, 1906 and on Sunday
morning, about daylight, he shot himself dying instantly. The shooting was done
with a shotgun. It is claimed by partied in Tennyson that the trouble was caused
by jealousy, but the general opinion is, he was insane; as his wife, Mrs.
Hardin, was an excellent woman, the latter theory os probably correct. He was
about 60 years old and his wife was about 49. They left two sons, Minor
aged 13 years and Nolan aged 6 years.
Per the Evansville Courier, Tuesday, June 26, 1906:
DOUBLE TRAGEDY VICTIMS BURIED
Almost Whole Town of Tennyson, Ind. Turns Out
Bodies Not In The Church
Coroner will return verdict in the Murder Suicide Case Today
BOONVILLE, Ind. -- A double funeral was held at Tennyson, this county, today
when Mr. and Mrs. William Hardin, who figured in the Sunday's tragedy at that
place were buried. Nearly every resident of the little village attended
the funeral services which were held at the Tennyson Methodist Episcopal Church.
The sermon by Rev. Clemons was quite lengthy but did not deal upon the rashness
of the deed committed by Hardin.
The bodies of the dead were not brought to the church but were left in the
undertaker's establishment near the church. After the sermon at the church, the
remains were taken to the Garrison cemetery, where the two were placed side by
side in the same grave. The relatives of the slain woman were in
attendance as was the daughters of the man. The emotion was intense.
