Notes:
Reuben and Dealpha were living with his mother in 1850 and with his brother, Newton, and his family in 1860.

Reuben served with the Union forces during the Civil War.  His service records show:
  Name:  Reuben E. Gholson            Residence:  Gallatin County, Illinois
   Unit # 310
   Enlisted as a Private on 14 August 1862.
   Enlisted in Company I, 131st Infantry Regiment, Illinois on 13 November 1862.

He also applied for a pension from his military service on 8 Apr 1865 (Application #65,420) but records don't show that one was awarded.
