Notes:
From The History of Grundy County, Illinois, 1882:
Orson lived on his grandfather's estate until he was sixteen years old.
He received as much educational advantages as the district would afford.
He even studied one year at Union Academy in Bennington. When his father
moved the family to Rochester, New York, he was placed under the tuition of
Chester Dewey, D. D. of the Rochester Collegiate Institute. He also taught
one year under Prof. Nathan Brittan, his brother-in-law, in the Fitzhugh Street
Seminary. His father moved the family to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1839.
When his father and brother returned to New York, he remained in Michigan for
fifteen years, teaching in the winters and farming in the summers. He also
served as School Inspector and Township Clerk.
In 1849, he sold his farm in Michigan and moved to a farm in Grundy County,
Illinois and started a nursery business. During this time, the plan for a
system of agricultural colleges emerged. When the plan was finally adopted
by the Congress of the United States, he was the first man appointed by the
Governor of Illinois as a member of the Board of Trustees to take charge of the
480,000 acres of land and found a college to start its operation.. This
college became the Illinois State University at Champaign, Illinois. In
1864, he was elected a member of the State Board of Agriculture, and re-elected
in 1866, holding the position for four years. One of his principal public
services was serving with the Illinois State Horticulture Society, founded in
1856. He was elected president of the society in 1861 and continued in it
until his death.
