__________
Notes:
In the Revolutionary War, Jonas was a member of a company commanded by his
brother, David, in Col. Seth Warner's regiment of the "Green Mountain Boys" and
did service in Canada in the fall of 1775. Prior to the Battle of Bennington,
August 16, 1777, two companies of militia had been organized in Shaftsbury, one
of them under his Captaincy, the other under Capt. Amos Huntington. But
Capt. Huntington was taken prisoner at Ticonderoga and the two companies were
consolidated under Jonas. When he received orders from Col. Moses Robinson
to march his company to Bennington, he was sick in bed, recovering from a fever,
but promptly called out his men and led them to the battle.
Jonas was the 5th Governor of the State of Vermont. His father-in-law, Thomas Chittenden, was the 1st. His political progression includes: In 1781, he was elected sheriff of Bennington County; in 1782, a member of the Council of Censors; in 1793, a member of the Governor's Council - re-elected six consecutive times; in 1795, assigned judge of Bennington County; in 1800, elected to the State Assembly (resigning the 2nd day to take a seat on the Governor's Council); in 1807, elected judge of the Vermont Supreme Court, and again in 1808; elected Governor of Vermont twice (1809-1812 and 1815-1819); in 1822, president of the Vermont Constitutional Convention, which was his last public office.
