John was in Co. K, 131 Regiment,
Illinois Volunteers. He was in an Army hospital in Memphis Tennessee when he
died of smallpox. His body was shipped to St. Louis Mo. on a steamboat, where
it was met by his father John Stedman Davis and an uncle, David Keasler Jr., who
brought him back to Hamilton County Illinois in a wagon to bury him in the
family plot.
