Denver was shot and killed over a debt of 50 cents. The newspaper articles regarding it show:
Daily American - West Frankfort, IL, Monday, October 2nd, 1933
Alton, Illinois: An argument over a .50 debt for a haircut
resulted in the murder of a barber and the possible fatal shooting of his
companion, a confession announced here today disclosed. The confession was
signed by Warren Little, 22, of McLeansboro, Illinois, who was picked up Sunday
with his younger brother, Carl Little, 20. The victim was Denver Carlton, whose
bullet-riddled, badly beaten body was found Sunday noon on an isolated rural
Highway near McLeansboro.
Aaron Johnson, his friend, with a bullet in his head, lay unconscious nearby.
The two brothers lived on their father's farm, 10 miles west of McLeansboro.
Carl Little denied any participation in the shooting. Carlton left his barber
shop late Saturday night, his days receipts in his pockets. On the way he
picked up Johnson. It was obvious from the appearance of Carlton's body that a
terrific struggle occurred. Carlton claimed Little owed him 50 cents for a
haircut and a fight ensued. Johnson sought to intervene and Little confessed he
shot him down. Then, in fear "Carlton would squawk" Little told police, he shot
Carlton, Killing him instantly with a bullet to the heart
From: Edwardsville (IL) Intelligencer, Tuesday June 26, 1934

cents for a haircut.
