Some family lore states: Lorena's father had placed her in a convent in Brown County, Texas to keep her from marrying Virgil. She ran away from the convent and rode a horse in the snow from Brownwood to Rochelle, getting pneumonia in the process, in order to see Virgil. At this point, her father decided it was alright if she married Virgil.

Virgil, Lorena, and the children were living with Lorena's parents in 1920.
